Topic 01-25 : Polymer electrolytes for calcium – based batteries

The objective is to find the optimal composition and to investigate the factors such as glass transition temperature, crystallinity and calcium salt content that affect the ionic conductivity of polymer electrolytes. The synthesise of electrolyte components, non commercial  polymers, blends, salts and possibly also electrolyte additives will be performed at WUT where the group has an expertise in designing and development of novel electrolyte materials. The conductivity of these novel electrolytes as well as ion-ion and ion-polymer interactions will be studied by means of electrochemical (Impedance spectroscopy) and spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR, FT-Raman). Also structure and phase transitions of newly design systems will be studied by X-ray and DSC. Furthermore  investigations of the electrolyte – electrode interface in functioning cell devices is o particular importance for stable battery performance. This part of the project will be realised in co-operation with Prof. Daniel Brandell from the Uppsalla University, where the group has specific competences on surface chemistry characterization and testing of full-cell batteries employing polymer electrolytes.

Each year, the student will spend 3 months at Uppsala to perform in and ex situ surface studies based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Fabrication of half- and full cells and appropriate testing and evaluation of these will also be performed there.
